Comer and Team Publish a Scientific Statement from the American Heart Association on Palliative Care in Stroke Patients

Friday, February 07, 2025

Amber Comer, JD, PhD

Amber Comer, PhD, JD, Affiliate Faculty at the IUCB recently co-authored an article titled “Palliative and End-of-Life Care in Stroke: A Scientific Statement From the American Heart Association” in Stroke. In the article, they provide an update to the 2014 scientific statement on the same topic. They found that palliative care needs are commonplace for stroke patients and should be addressed after stroke through the illness experience. They also highlight that there is an urgent need for more research and interventions in this space for stroke patients.  They argue that the creation of new models or adaptation of existing models must be done to better serve stroke patients when making palliative care and end of life decisions.
